How to use paintings and photos to foster empathy

While empathy has always existed, our contemporary understanding of it has actually blossomed through the visual arts. In this Topic we explore how paintings and photographs can be used to foster empathy, and how through the introduction of the fifth skill of  ‘viewing’ and the integration of viewing frameworks and routines into the language learning syllabus, we can systematise art appreciation which may generate greater empathy in language education.
